Trying Bourbon For The First Time

I have never had a cocktail featuring any style of whiskey. When getting a cocktail at a restaurant or bar can be $12 or more, I stick to the base spirits I know I like. And trying to determine what to use when a recipe calls for whiskey is confusing. Do they mean bourbon? Rye? Scotch? Give me specifics!

But I want to at least explore and see if I even like this style of spirit. I bought a small bottle of Maker’s Mark, partially because I’ve read it’s on the sweeter side. Even if I don’t end up using it for drinks, there’s options to use it for cooking or baking.

The Cocktail

I found this recipe when I was looking for ideas for Aperol. Bourbon is the base, but with the juices and liqueurs used, this seems to be a lighter cocktail compared to what I imagine bourbon drinks typically are. Wicked Behavior is a shaken cocktail featuring bourbon, pineapple, Aperol, edelflower liqueur, lemon juice, and honey.

This is a sweet, light cocktail but you can tell bourbon is the backbone of the drink. I could taste the pineapple, but I believe my palate is not developed enough to discern anything else. Didn’t hate it but didn’t really like it either. However, if I had gotten this at a bar or restaurant, I would have finished it.

Final Thoughts

I have to admit, I’ll probably never order a bourbon cocktail at a bar. I’m not a fan of the taste of this particular spirit. I wouldn’t say it’s a general alcohol taste, but there’s something about it that is not working for me. Personally, this isn’t a great loss but I’ll still keep a bottle of bourbon in case someone I know would like some.

Are you a fan a bourbon? What’s your favorite drink featuring it?
